Creativity and New Media

Hello Class! My example for creativity in new media is the company I created, The Jewelry Guy. I started this company a few months ago but haven't yet taken to social media nor created a company logo, so I decided I'd do those things to get credit for this assignment. For the Logo, I wanted something simple, catchy, and that didn't need to be explained if someone looked at it. I've attached it below for your viewing. For the social media aspect, I just created an Instagram Page for my company, but haven't posted any photos yet since I'm waiting to get more followers (ghost or not) before I start posting. I figure I'd want about 100-200 followers before I can begin posting and then using Instagram ads to sell my product further even more. My next mission is to make a website for the products I sell, but I found a niche website that lets me sell jewelry at a great mark-up, so I think creating my own site and having people go there will be a bit of a challenge. I've provided the link to my Instagram page, as well as the website I currently sell on.

    I think it is great that you created your own company and have a plan as to what your next steps are. I love the logo and the name of your company!

So my suggestion or idea for a new media concept revolves around a payphone. Not the actual phone itself, but the concept that anybody could use it for x amount of dollars, but not to just make a phone call, to surf the web as well, or face-time your friends and family. Imagine this: technological 'booths' setup all around New York City, and you pay a fee to rent it out for x amount of hours or minutes, and inside you can surf the web, make calls, go on social media, check your mail, whatever. This would eliminate our need to constantly look at our phones to make sure they're charged, would embrace the idea to go outside once in a while to check this new technology and new media out, and invites so many new business opportunities within it. I think it would also fit the 5 C's New Media entails; communication, collaboration, community, creativity and convergence. There would obviously be a lot of kinks to work out, in terms of who would be supplying these booths with

Wiki So Far

I haven't started the wiki as of yet, just looked over it briefly. I plan on messaging a few kids in our class about it to see what they've done and see if they could provide any assistance in terms of me getting started with the Wiki. I haven't created or edited any pages yet, but that will change in the coming weeks for sure. I am working on being an editor for some pages, so fact checking pages that already exist and see if the data is correct. Again, I will be doing most of this work/assignement in the next 2-3 weeks.

The article entitled "1 + 1 + 1 = 1:  The new math of mashups" written by Sasha Jones explains how Dj's are using music, old music specifically, and pairing them up with a different style of music to make them harmonious in a way people hadn't thought of before. Take for example Freelance Hellraiser and his mashup of Christina Aguilera's hit "Genie In a Bottle" and the Strokes' "Hard to Explain" which went viral and on the billboard charts. He dubbed it "A Stroke of Genius", using Aguilera's vocals for the majority of the song, and using the Strokes' music in the background. The two songs put together made people realize that music is not binary; different tempos, melodies and genres can be crossed to create something that's never been heard.
