Creativity and New Media

Image
Hello Class! My example for creativity in new media is the company I created, The Jewelry Guy. I started this company a few months ago but haven't yet taken to social media nor created a company logo, so I decided I'd do those things to get credit for this assignment. For the Logo, I wanted something simple, catchy, and that didn't need to be explained if someone looked at it. I've attached it below for your viewing. For the social media aspect, I just created an Instagram Page for my company, but haven't posted any photos yet since I'm waiting to get more followers (ghost or not) before I start posting. I figure I'd want about 100-200 followers before I can begin posting and then using Instagram ads to sell my product further even more. My next mission is to make a website for the products I sell, but I found a niche website that lets me sell jewelry at a great mark-up, so I think creating my own site and having people go there will be a bit of a challenge.

HW Creativity

The article entitled "1 + 1 + 1 = 1:  The new math of mashups" written by Sasha Jones explains how Dj's are using music, old music specifically, and pairing them up with a different style of music to make them harmonious in a way people hadn't thought of before. Take for example Freelance Hellraiser and his mashup of Christina Aguilera's hit "Genie In a Bottle" and the Strokes' "Hard to Explain" which went viral and on the billboard charts. He dubbed it "A Stroke of Genius", using Aguilera's vocals for the majority of the song, and using the Strokes' music in the background. The two songs put together made people realize that music is not binary; different tempos, melodies and genres can be crossed to create something that's never been heard. This is where the creativity comes in, because the fact that a D.J can spend months on one song, one mashup, to make it not only perfectly melodic, but then making it a hit among

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used for many different instances, such as for gaming (perhaps the biggest), or to escape life, a la Dwight Schrute (best character and best show in the entire world, I've seen every season/episode at least 10 times). Things like mimic-ing a natural disaster and using that simulation to figure out what you should do, or what you shouldn't do. The Army, Navy or Military can use this virtual reality as a training mechanism so that they can be prepared when its time for combat. The virtual world is a representation of the real world, and can have cons as well. One, for example, is lagging in the virtual world. It doesn't seem realistic when the game lags, and can lead to all sorts of problem with user interface that is critical to that sustainability of virtual worlds. It's hard for developers to create the same type of virtual world we live in the reality due to the simple physics of it; there are too many small 'dings' to fix every time a ne

Blog about Twitter

A Twitter discussion might actually be more engaging than a blackboard discussion. It allows users from all different parts of the world (really anyone who uses the application) to contribute to the conversation at hand. And then you add in the ability to add hashtags, that takes conversations even further with people finding that specific topic you're talking about just from looking through posts under that hashtag. It's really a universal blackboard if you think about it, without the normal boundaries classrooms set (who can be in the discussion, and what they can say). Compared to an in-class discussion, I would say it's less room for interpretation and less engaging. In a classroom, I feel like my attention is focused and less wandering. Compared to a Twitter discussion, I would get lazy and reply to something when I feel like it, and there could always be the chance that I don't want to read through everyone's comments and only read what I find might be inter

Social Networking Sites

Facebook is probably the mother of all Social Networking, as it really laid the foundation for everything that has come out since (yes MySpace and Friendster and AIM were first, but for the newer generation who didn't know all that I start from Facebook). When you log into Facebook you are automatically taken to the homepage where you see a list of friend statuses, or group postings, or pictures someone was tagged in as you scroll down. You also have the option to explore other people's pages and request someone as a 'friend' if you do in fact know them. You can do a lot on Facebook, like creating your company a page, making people visit that page, posting coupons there, even pay for ads. It's really an all-encompassing site that has a lot more pros than cons. Twitter is the new Facebook, in that it has picked up heavily over the last 4-5 years. We see more people gravitating towards it for political reasons, like when Donald Trump makes a suggestive or inappropri

Blog Social Networking

Social Networking platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Pinterest all serve as different avenues a company or business can display their products. Many businesses started their online stores via Facebook and Instagram because they know how to selectively target their products to a specific audience/demographic. The way that they can do these things is with Facebook and Instagram ads. If you're purchasing ads, for example, on Facebook, they have a ton of options of how you want to place your ad. You can choose the exact radius where the ad will be placed, for how many days and for how many times in a single day someone sees your ad. They also add all these cool features that lets you track how often someone is clicking on or viewing your ads, so that you can compile meaningful metrics to better judge what your business needs to do better. Pinterest is also pretty cool, because if someone finds something neat, it can go instantly viral with just a few clicks. There ha
